Mistake! Now what?

santosh kanekar

MY BAD.

Is this what you say when you make a mistake? ⁣

And what happens when someone else makes a mistake? ⁣

“How could you do this? ⁣
You deliberately did this coz ⁣
you know I will get agitated!” or⁣

“You are so incompetent”⁣

We overestimate our skills, talents ⁣
and capabilities and ⁣
we always have doubts about ⁣
others competence, character and honesty !⁣

Don’t agree?⁣

Check what happens on the road daily. ⁣
If a car cuts another car or ⁣
a car and bike have to brake suddenly, ⁣
each person believes ⁣
it’s the other’s mistake. ⁣

Also we stereotype people and ⁣
say “These Russians/ Women/ Teenagers/ Bikers/ Cyclists just can’t drive”⁣

David Dunning and Justin Kruger studied people and ⁣
their self perception ⁣
about intelligence and skills. ⁣
They found that consistently
everyone rated themselves as
“above average” intelligence
.⁣

Parents always think that ⁣
their children are “above average” or
even “class toppers if only…”⁣

Dunning–Kruger effect means⁣
those who are incompetent⁣
will have little insight ⁣
into their incompetence⁣

Plain English?⁣
Idiots don’t know they are idiots!⁣

Does this mean we should ⁣
brow beat ourselves into ⁣
fake modesty or ⁣
self flagellate and ⁣
say “I am no good, worthless **” ⁣

Off course not!⁣

See my video (with subtitles) on the Dunning Kruger effect and what shape it takes

Dunning Kruger Effect and what we can do about it

Just be aware of this⁣
cognitive bias and next time, ⁣
when you have to estimate the time or effort you will take ⁣
to finish something, ⁣

Add at least 20% to whatever ⁣
your initial estimation is because ⁣
you will underestimate the time taken⁣

Today,⁣

How will you reframe someone else’s mistake as their wrong action and not bad character?⁣
