When we talk about leaders,
we often prefix it with “strong”
We want “Strong Leaders”
The image is of a powerful
(often male) leader who
stirs everyone’s imagination
by a speech and
rouses everyone into action.
He often leads from the front
with a vision and a charisma
which is so shiny
it can light up a stadium without electricity
We say
“I look at someone and
I know she is a leader” OR
“He does not have the X factor
to lead, something is missing”
These are all Hero archetypes that mislead us
Leadership is not about leaders,
it’s about whom they serve
That’s right!
Whom they serve
Simon Sinek gives this example
from the Navy Seals.
Toughest admission task
called BUD/S training spread
over 24 weeks!
Out of which 1 week is
evocatively titled as Hell’s Week
It’s the macho guys
which drop out first.
All the bravado lasts a few minutes
It’s those who
even in their worst
physical and emotional shape,
lookout for others,
help others,
are the one’s who make the cut
Leadership is a privilege of followership
It’s about creating conditions
for others to succeed
It’s an opportunity to serve others
