why writing is important

In school, did you love or hate English language classes?

I hated grammar classes.
I still don’t get the hang of it and
I am pretty sure,
my English teacher would have spotted
ten mistakes within these few lines.

I am glad the past participle
is in the past and
while my future might still be tense,
I actually enjoy writing.

I actually enjoy reading and
because I want to communicate
what I read or what I heard,
I have written a lot over
the past nine years.
Not that much of it is
readable by someone other than me.

When I heard David Perrel
highlighting the importance of writing
I realized that actually
you, me and all of us
are writing a lot ever since
social media burst on the scene.

Even if your sentences are
full of emojis and
indecipherable abbreviations
like OOTD or ROFL,
we are expressing primarily
by writing till such time
that we all express only on video

Whether you are a student or
a corporate warrior
slaying your exams or
competition respectively,
we are writing assignments,
emails, presentations and
somehow bringing the invisible,
ephemeral thoughts and
ideas in your mind
onto a medium which everyone can see

Whether we like or not,
we have to express our ideas
and have the ability to write, express
and influence others through our words

And hence, writing
(and I would say, first reading)
is a key skill of 21st Century and
will only increase in importance
